For Fall 2024, Crate & Barrel has partnered with Projecthrive to create a collection of handloom ikat that employed 80 artisans for 559 workdays. This collaboration provided both economic opportunity and representation to artisans with virtually no access to education and helped each of them provide for their families.
It is made from an ancient yarn tie-dye technique done by artisan communities and then woven into fabric on handlooms. Each weaver is able to make no more than a few meters a day and the intricate yarn tie-dye process takes several weeks. Each motif is deeply symbolic and rooted in village community life.
Sonica Sarna has been connecting them with global brands such as Crate & Barrel through the Projecthrive initiative since 2019.
Through the utilization of hand block printing rather than machine printing, we’ve sequestered 3036 kg of CO2 emissions in the production of these garments.
Through this collaboration by using the block printing technique instead of machine printing, we have saved 308 kWof electricity.
